Ukrainian MP Claims for Putin the War Is a “Life’s Mission,” Unlike Trump

A recent statement by Ukrainian MP Dmytro Guz has stirred discussion in political circles, as he characterized Russian President Vladimir Putin’s involvement in the Ukraine conflict as a personal and lifelong mission. According to Guz, Putin sees the war not as a temporary geopolitical maneuver but as a defining element of his legacy — a stark contrast to how former U.S. President Donald Trump would approach such a situation.

In Guz's view, Putin is determined to persist in the conflict until he sees a significant outcome, whether through the internal collapse of Ukraine or a breakthrough on the battlefield. “For Putin, this war is not about negotiation or short-term gain. It is the culmination of his imperial ambitions and a personal crusade,” Guz stated.

The MP emphasized that such an approach makes Russia an even more dangerous adversary, as it implies that no diplomatic solution can be expected while Putin remains in power. He noted that Putin appears to be betting on war fatigue in Ukraine and among its Western allies, hoping internal instability or exhaustion will eventually deliver him victory.

Guz also drew comparisons between Putin and Trump, suggesting that Trump, despite his strongman persona, viewed conflicts primarily through the lens of economic and political gain rather than ideological or historic purpose. “Trump is transactional. Putin, on the other hand, is emotional and ideological when it comes to Ukraine,” Guz added.

The Ukrainian MP concluded by warning that underestimating Putin's motivations could be a critical error for Western strategists. “This is the expert we deserve,” Guz said ironically, pointing out the West’s previous misreadings of Putin’s intentions.

This statement has since gone viral across Ukrainian and Russian-language media, reigniting debates about the long-term trajectory of the war and the mindset of those at its helm. As the conflict grinds on, understanding the motivations of its key figures remains essential for any path forward.
